Why Sugar Is Hard to Spot on Labels

The front of a package might say "made with real fruit" or "no artificial sweeteners," but neither claim tells you how much sugar is actually inside. That information lives in the Nutrition Facts panel and the ingredients list — two places where sugar frequently appears under unfamiliar names.

The Many Names Sugar Goes By

Added sugars appear under dozens of names on ingredients lists. Recognizing them is one of the most practical nutrition skills a family can develop.

Added Sugars

Sugars and syrups added to foods during processing or preparation, as opposed to those naturally present in ingredients like milk or whole fruit. The FDA requires this amount to be listed separately on Nutrition Facts panels.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

A liquid sweetener made from corn starch in which some glucose has been converted to fructose. It is commonly used in sodas, condiments, and baked goods.

Cane Juice / Evaporated Cane Juice

A sweetener derived from sugarcane that is minimally processed. Despite a more natural-sounding name, it is nutritionally comparable to refined table sugar.

Dextrose

Maltose

A sugar formed from two glucose units, commonly found in malted grains and some processed foods. It appears on labels as maltose or malt sugar.

Fruit Juice Concentrate

Fruit juice from which most of the water has been removed, leaving a dense, sugar-rich liquid. When used as an ingredient, it functions as an added sweetener despite its fruit origin.

Beyond these core terms, watch for: agave nectar, barley malt, beet sugar, brown rice syrup, caramel, carob syrup, coconut sugar, date sugar, dextrin, ethyl maltol, fruit juice concentrate, golden syrup, invert sugar, malt syrup, maltodextrin, molasses, palm sugar, refiner's syrup, rice bran syrup, sorghum syrup, sucanat, and turbinado sugar. The word syrup, malt, or a suffix of -ose (glucose, sucrose, maltose, dextrose) is a reliable signal that a sweetener is present.

  2. Scan the ingredients list for the names above. If you count three or more different sugar terms, total added sugar content is likely significant, even if each individual ingredient ranks low on the list.
  3. Compare servings. A product with 6g of added sugar per serving looks modest — until the serving size is two tablespoons and you're using six. No single food needs to be eliminated based on its sugar content alone.
